Steinbrenner Got A 33,900% Cumulative Return On His Yankee Investment

Picture
Longtime New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who died recently of a heart attack, is sure to be remembered as the man who brought winning back to the Bronx with gusto. But his legacy is also that of savvy investor.

When Steinbrenner led a group that bought the Yankees from CBS for $10 million in 1973, the team had just drawn under 1 million fans for the first time since World War II. Today, the Yankees regularly draw 4 million a season and are the centerpiece of a sports-media powerhouse. Yankee Global Enterprises, which includes Steinbrenner's stakes in the team, YES Network and Yankees-related hospitality businesses, have a combined equity value of $3.4 billion.

That's a 33,900% cumulative return from his initial investment.

Where Billionaires are Eating

Picture
This list of restaurants that billionaires often frequent provides a great list of places to try. Because of their disposable income and acceptance of only the best food, you can be guaranteed a good meal.
Oprah Winfrey likes the food at Italian eatery, Sette Mezzo in New York which she apparently calls "a piece of Italy".
Russian Billionaires Roman Abramovich and Mikhail Prokhorov allegedly spend large amounts of money at Nello’s, a small Italian restaurant in New York. It is rumored that Prokhorov spent $19,000 on lunch and Abramovich $47,000 on dinner.
Fashion designers are also taking part in the restaurant business. Giorgio Armani opened his first restaurant Armani Ristorante in New York last year and has several other restaurants in other countries, including Honk Kong, Singapore and France. Ralph Lauren has his own restaurant, RL, in Chicago, a restaurant said to be another ‘favorite’ of Oprah’s. Earlier this year he also opened “Ralph’s” in Paris, his first restaurant in Europe.

And lastly we have Mark Cuban, who is a fan of Blondies in New York:  “Best wings in the city. Ice cold beer.” Adds the Dallas Mavericks owner, “It's easy to find fancy food in NYC. It's hard to find great wings and a place you can de-stress after a long day. Blondies is a treat."
